It took 30 years, but we finally got closure. They say that Guns N’ Roses’ first show in Israel, in the summer of 1993, was awful. The second, 11 years ago, was decent. The third, six years ago, was the concert Monday night at Tel Aviv's Hayarkon Park was tremendous, topping all expectations. “Paradise City” wasn't just the song that ended the show. The 60,000 people at the park for three hours were as close to Paradise City as they're ever going to may be getting carried away. I can already hear somebody saying, “Man, didn’t you hear how Axl’s throat is shot?”Guns N’ Roses playing in Tel Aviv, on Alon LevinWell, I’ll get to that. But somehow, the state of Axl Rose's vocal chords didn’t change a thing. A concert doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfect. Guns N’ Roses’ performance was one of the best in Israel in recent years, a park concert for the concerts are always a combination of the musical and the human. Let’s start with the concerts are the last place you go to be moved by people playing music. The music is a sidenote to the lighting, maybe the smoke – the mass event itself. And then of course there are the selfies with which you plague social can’t remember the last time I stood in Hayarkon Park entranced by the people onstage. And it wasn’t just the speed of Slash’s guitar right, provided plenty of gentleness, Alon LevinIf speed were all it was, we’d have yawned after his 500th solo I think maybe there were 17 million that night. But alongside the speed was superlative precision and a wonderful combination of rugged power and gentleness. Along with all the noise, Slash has the was he the only one playing sublimely; so did the second guitarist, Richard Fortus and bassist Duff McKagan. And blue collar Frank Ferrer drums, Dizzy Reed piano and Melissa Reese keys weren’t just there to back up the superstars, they were an organic part of the Axl can no longer produce that famous shriek, but the shriek was never the thing. In some songs his vocals were almost pathetic, but they were never truly pathetic – and the stellar playing wasn't the only thing providing the compensation. The human component was at N' Roses Returns to Its Natural Habitat, and Doesn't Disappoint The Lord is a Paul Simon songIn Tel Aviv, J. Lo Reminds Everyone That She Was Twerking Long Before Beyonce At Heaven's DoorIn Guns N’ Roses’ short heyday in the late '80s and early '90s, Axl was, to me anyway, the epitome of the conceited and decadent rock star. On Monday night, he hit the sweet spot between that same narcissist and a cheery Florida retiree. He was approachable and didn’t take himself too seriously. He was a full participant in the joy of rock ’n’ roll is going to sound far-fetched, but one quality that made the Israel concert was Guns’ humility. This wasn’t a show by a band that thinks it’s the center of the universe. The band considers itself another link – and not necessarily an important one – in the chain of that monumental thing called rock ’n’ roll. These were stars who were also – maybe most of all – fans state of Axl Rose's vocal chords didn’t change a thing. A concert doesn’t have to be perfect to be could guess it by the way they dressed. Duff’s bass bore the emblem of His Purple Highness, our lord and teacher Prince Rogers Nelson. Drummer Frank Ferrer's T-shirt was emblazoned with the likeness of some more royalty, the Clash’s Joe Strummer. Second guitarist Richard Fortus looked like the love child of the Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood and the New York Dolls’ Johnny Thunders. Slash wore a T-shirt celebrating the classic horror film “The Omen.”But clothes don't make the man or woman keyboard player. And on Monday night, Guns was a walking, talking, ass-kicking encyclopedia of American music of the past 70 course, the pop-chart hard rock that the band is known for was there, but so were the blues, '70s stadium rock and an almost Springsteen-ish piano rock. The rendition of “Estranged” was particularly magnificent, far better than the studio version. There was also funk, garage rock and even some country and soul. All these schools and worlds of sound were amazingly distilled into Guns’ own songs, but of course they were clearest in the band's covers, and in the cover fragments it merged with its own N' Roses' Slash on the Tel Aviv Alon LevinI’m not talking just the well-trodden Dylan and McCartney covers, or a Jimi Hendrix snippet, but less-expected homages like Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions “People Get Ready”, guitar legend Link Wray “Rumble”, and most of all, Iggy Pop and the Stooges. The only song Duff sang all night was “ Eye” from the Stooges' “Fun House,” one of the greatest rock albums of all years ago, Iggy and the Stooges sang that song at their spectacular show at the nearby Tel Aviv exhibition grounds, now known as Expo Tel Aviv. The hall was half empty; there were maybe 2,000 people there. On Monday, Guns performed “ Eye” at full power to 60,000 people. The Messiah must be around the played almost all their hits, so for those of you complaining that they didn’t sing “Don’t Cry,” I can only say get with the program of one of Tel Aviv's greatest concerts ever.
